PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS

INTRODUCTION

The Institute offers post graduate degrees for the professional and fresh graduates in water resources development with the objectives of training and enhancing the knowledge and skills of professionals in planning and management of land and water resources, and widening their perspectives on Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM).

The institute started its Post Graduate program in 2002 and since then a total of 138 students graduated (46 PG.Dip., 102 M.Sc. and 7 PhD) with degrees in Water Resources Development

As IWRM is a multi-disciplinary field, requiring a holistic understanding of the system with a good blend of engineering, agricultural, socio-economic and environmental analyses, a multi-disciplinary course curriculum is pursued. The multi-disciplinary programs are aimed at engineers, planners, hydrologists, agriculturists, physical and social scientists.

The diversity of background of the students provides a unique learning opportunity through exchange of ideas and information from a group with different understanding and from different perspectives, but with the same vision.

Bangladesh is predominantly a floodplain country where water is key to socio-economic development and sustainability of the eco-system. Flood, drought, cyclone, river erosion, siltation, and water scarcity in dry season have made water management a challenging task.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

The minimum qualification for admission shall normally be an M.Sc. Engg. / M. Engg. degree in Civil Engineering / Water Resources Engineering / Environmental Engineering / Agricultural Engineering.

or

Or M.Sc. degree in Water Resources Development or its equivalent from any recognized institution.

ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS

The minimum duration of the Ph.D. course shall be 4 semes-ters from the date of provisional admission.

A student must complete all requirements for the Ph.D. degree within six academic years (session) from the date of her/his provisional admission

A student must complete a minimum of 54 credit hours of which 45 credit hours shall be assigned for a thesis.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Four years Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering/ Water Resources Engineering/ Agricultural Engineering/ Urban and Regional Planning/ Environmental Science/ Environmental Science and Management/ Soil, Water and Environmental/ Geography and Environmental/ Geology/ Disaster Management or its equivalent.

or

A minimum GPA of 2.5 out of 4.0 or PG. Dip. (WRD) or its equivalent having a minimum GPA of 2.65 out of 4.0 from any recognized institution.

ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS

The minimum duration of the M.Sc. (WRD) program shall be 3 semesters.

A student must complete all the requirements for the degree within 5 academic years (session) from the date of the first admission in the program.

A student must earn a minimum of 36 credit hours including a thesis for which 18 credit hours shall be assigned.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

An applicant not having a four year Bachelor’s degree must have a Master’s degree with honors.

ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS

The minimum duration of the PG. Dip. (WRD) course shall be 2 semesters.

A student must complete all the requirements for the diploma within 3 academic years (session) from the date of her/his first admission in the program.

A student must earn a minimum of 24 credit hours including a project for which 6 credit hours shall be assigned.

FACILITIES

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

Financial assistance in the form of fellowship and research assistantship are often provided to students. When such awards are intended for incoming students, then this is announced during admission process in newspapers/ Institute noticeboard/ Institute website. Prospective students may have to apply for fellowship and research assistantship along with their application for admission.

Financial assistance is also provided to continuing students. In such cases, financial assistance is offered to regular students of the Institute who are in good academic standing.

STUDENT STATUS

Full time students must registrar for a minimum of 12 credit hours and a maximum of 15 credit hours per semester. A full-time student shall not be allowed to be in employment of any organization (even as part-time employee).

However, they may be employed as teaching / research assistant at the University.


A student may enroll as a part-time student. Students, serving in different organizations, may also be admitted as part-time students with written consent of the employer.

A part-time student may be assigned a maximum of 9 credit hours of course including thesis / project work in any semester.
