According to the Bangladesh Environment Conservation Act 1995 (amended
2010) obtaining Environmental Clearance is mandatory for each type of
industries and projects. The Environmental Clearance, for certain industries
and projects, is obtained after the approval of Environmental Impact Assessment
(EIA). In the recent decades of development, floodplains, coastal banks and
waterways have been disrupted in many ways causing damages to the
ecosystems and the environment as whole. More importantly, experiences have
shown that society and culture play equally important roles in the success of
any development work. Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIA),
when integrated into project design, guide project proponents in identifying
environmental and social impacts, maximizing the benefits, selecting
appropriate mitigation measures and minimizing environmental and social
impacts. These days EIA is an obligatory part of any development projects. This
short course aims in providing knowledge of ESIA among the students, who
are about to enter professional lives, to understand the importance of ESIA in
all development projects and as a tool to achieve sustainability.
