Flood is a natural phenomenon cum disaster causing damages to the life, property, economy and the environment at the least. On the contrary, floodwater deposits silts on the floodplain that makes the land fertile. Rice and jute farming as well as fisheries and livestock production require a large amount of inundation water. In the recent decades of development, floodplains and waterways have been disrupted in many ways altering the flood flow and causing prolonged flooding. The situation is further exacerbated due to the impacts of climate change, deposition of sediment on the riverbed and riverbank erosion. Besides, the transboundary context is also important in terms of flood flow generation and basin level flood management in Bangladesh. Therefore, integrated flood management instead of flood control is more rational in the socio-economic, environmental and ecological considerations of the river-floodplain landscape of Bangladesh.
