The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is the leading scientific and intergovernmental body under the auspices of the United Nations for the assessment of climate change. The IPCC is currently in its Sixth Assessment cycle. The Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) is expected to be ready in 2021.
Each of the IPCC Assessment Reports requires the international selected team of experts working as Lead and Contributing authors to consider the range of scientific, technical and socio-economic views, the diversity of the scientifically and technically valid evidence, and the level of agreement in the scientific, technical, and socio-economic literature to compose a full scientific and technical assessment of the global status on climate change.
As a Lead Author A.K.M. Saiful Islam will be responsible to write and contribute to the production of chapters within the assessment report. His focus will be on climate information for regional impact and risks assessment. He will bring his interdisciplinary research experience in the area of hydrology, climate extremes, climate change, to join the efforts of IPCC Working Group I focusing on physical science basis for assessing the scientific, technical, environmental, economic and social aspects of climate change. For further information on the work of IPCC Working Group I can be found here
Since joining at the Institute of Water and Flood Management as a Lecturer in 1997, Dr. Islam has focused his research and teaching work on improving the understanding of the impact of climate change on hydrological cycles, mainly through the regional climate modelling, hydrological impact modelling and remote sensing applications. He also currently serves as Coordinator of the Climate Change Cell of BUET.
Dr. Islam has given more than 100 invited talks and seminars throughout the world, speaking on diverse topics ranging from climate change impacts on water resources to flood forecasting. He is teaching about 10 graduate courses and organize many workshops locally and overseas. Dr. Islam has received a BSc. in Civil Engineering in (1996), an MS in Water Resources Engineering (1999), and a PhD in Civil Engineering (2004). Dr. Islam has over 34 peer-reviewed publications, 6 book chapters and 97 articles in proceedings of international conferences to his name.
