Halda is a meandering river which originates from the northern hilly region of Bangladesh and is one of the most important natural carp spawning grounds for the country. Both hydro-morphological and environmental factors had made this river a favorable place for spawning of brood carp. Different anthropogenic activities that have been reported to have negative impacts on Halda ecosystem such as, over fishing of brood fish, massive sand lifting etc.. Due to lack of waste management and sanitation facilities, raw and partially decomposed industrial and urban wastes and various hazardous chemicals substances from Raozan, Fatickchari, Hathazari thana find their way to the Halda River. However, this river has not been focused well in terms of pollution status. Therefore, the present study aimed to assess the water quality in relation to pollutants and its impacts on breeding performance of major carps in the river Halda.
