The Institute of Water and Flood Management (IWFM) of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) organized a three-day long conference from 22 – 24 February 2025, with special focus on, ‘Water and Ecosystem Conservation for Climate Resilience‘ at CIRDAP.

In the inauguration ceremony on 22 February 2025, Dr. Farhina Ahmed, Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, attended as the Chief Guest. The special guest was Ms. Inge Klassen, First Secretary for Water & Climate, Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Bangladesh (EKN). The inauguration ceremony was chaired by the Pro-Vice Chancellor of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), Professor Abdul Hasib Chowdhury. The ceremony’s welcoming address was delivered by Professor G M Tarekul Islam, Chair of the Organizing Committee of ICWFM-2025. Professor Mohammad Asad Hussain, Director of the Institute of Water and Flood Management (IWFM), BUET, presented a vote of thanks.

                   

The event featured insightful keynote speeches, engaging panel discussions, and a special session focused on water governance and sustainability.

Dr. Leon Hermans (UNESCO-IHE Delft & TU Delft) delivered a keynote on “Water Policy Analysis and Learning for Transformative Pathways Planning,” while Prof. AKM Saiful Islam (IWFM, BUET) addressed “Water and Ecosystems in a Changing Climate: Impacts and Pathways to Resilience”.

The 10th International Conference on Water and Flood Management (ICWFM-2025) witnessed participation from 8 countries, featuring 24 technical sessions with 150 oral presentations and 1 poster session showcasing 29 poster presentations.

A special session, “Youth Aspirations towards Water and Delta Governance in Bangladesh,” organized by EKN, highlighted youth perspectives in water management. Three panel discussions were held which were organized by ITN-BUET, EKN and CEGIS respectively. These sessions provided a platform for experts to discuss water resource management, climate resilience, and sustainable policies, engaging researchers, professionals, and policymakers from multiple disciplines.

              

The Closing Ceremony of the 10th International Conference on Water and Flood Management (ICWFM-2025) was held on 24 February 2025 at the CIRDAP International Conference Center (CICC), Dhaka, Bangladesh. Ms. Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Advisor, Ministry of Water Resources (MoWR) and Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change (MoEFCC), Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, attended as the Chief Guest. Mr. Nazmul Ahsan, Secretary, Ministry of Water Resources (MoWR), Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, was present as the Guest of Honor. The Special Guests included Dr. Muhammad Moniruzzaman, Deputy Managing Director, Dhaka Water Supply & Sewerage Authority (DWASA), Mr. Malik Fida A Khan, Executive Director, Center for Environmental and Geographic Information Services (CEGIS), Bangladesh, and Mr. S M Mahbubur Rahman, Executive Director, Institute of Water Modeling (IWM), Bangladesh. The ceremony was chaired by Professor Abu Borhan Mohammad Badruzzaman, Vice Chancellor, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET). The vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. Shammi Haque, Organizing Secretary, ICWFM-2025.

The event concluded with a Cultural Program, celebrating the rich heritage of Bangladesh, followed by a Closing Dinner, providing an opportunity to honor the achievements of the conference and express gratitude to the participants.
